Career Support
Spruce Mountain Inn recognizes that employment plays an important role for young adults transitioning to independence. A successful work experience can provide residents with a sense of accomplishment, a foundation for increased self-esteem, and enhanced well-being.
The Spruce Mountain Inn Career Development Program offers residents the opportunity to gain new skills as well as increased personal autonomy. Residents can benefit from the vocationally-related components of our Life Skills Program, volunteer placements, and competitive employment.
Components of the Career Development Program:
Volunteer Community Placement/Internship – Volunteer job placements are individualized to match the resident’s needs, interests, abilities, and personal goals. Spruce Mountain Inn has partnered with more than 80 potential placements to include: government agencies, local non-profits, nature centers and parks, community social services, television and radio stations, schools and libraries and environmental and social justice organizations. All unpaid work is accompanied by a stipend paid to the resident by Spruce Mountain Inn.
Competitive Work – Community volunteer placement and internships often result in offers of paid employment. Paid work moves residents along the continuum toward independence.
Career Assessments - The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a widely utilized psychological tool designed to assess personality types based on four dichotomies: Introversion (I) vs. Extraversion (E), Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N), Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F), and Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P). By categorizing individuals into one of 16 distinct personality types, the MBTI offers valuable insights into personal preferences, communication styles, and behavioral tendencies. This framework not only aids in fostering self-awareness but also enhances interpersonal interactions across professional and personal spheres. Understanding one's MBTI type can significantly inform career choices, team dynamics, and conflict resolution strategies, making it a vital resource in organizational development and personal growth initiatives.
The Holland Self-Directed Search (SDS) is a valuable tool designed to facilitate career exploration and personal development by aligning interests with potential occupational paths. Developed by psychologist John L. Holland, the SDS assesses individuals based on six personality types—Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional—often referred to as the RIASEC model. Through a structured questionnaire, our residents gain insights into their preferences and strengths, enabling them to identify careers that resonate with their personal values and skills. This self-assessment not only empowers young adults to make informed decisions about their professional journeys but also enhances job satisfaction and fulfillment by encouraging alignment between one's intrinsic interests and chosen career paths.
